Court sentences man to life imprisonment for rape

A High Court, Minna, Niger State, has sentenced a man, Ugochukwu Unadumene, to life in imprisonment for rape.

Unademene of Ekosa village, Agaie, who was arrested in 2018 was said to have raped a female youth corper. He was not given option of fine.
Confirming the report, Niger State Command Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Wasiu Abiodun in a statement said the presiding Judge sitting at High Court Minna, held that the prosecution has proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and sentenced the convict to one year in imprisonment for the offence of voluntary causing hurt without provocation, and sentenced him to life imprisonment without option of fine for the offence of rape.
The sentences are to run concurrently.
Abiodun assured members of the public that the police and other security agencies in the state will not rest on their oars in tackling crime and criminality in the environment towards a safe and secured Niger State.
It would be recalled that on June 3, 2018, an incident of rape was reported at Agaie Police station that a female youth corper, serving at Lapai, who was conveyed on a motorcycle by the the suspect along Lapai-Agaie road was criminally assaulted and raped by the rider after diverting into a forest.
The suspect was apprehended and investigated by Agaie division and later transferred to SCID Minna. The Command filed two charges before the High Court Minna for prosecution and invited eight witnesses while the accused person entered defence and denied the allegation.
