●Urges members of the public to disregard his publicised membership of council
Fiery journalist, human and environmental rights activist, Comrade Tony Erha, has called on the public to disregard the news doing the rounds that he has been appointed as a member of the Publicity Committee of the governorship campaign council of the All Progressives Congress (APC), towards the party’s campaign for the election holding in Edo State on 21st September, 2024
Erha said that he was shocked by the torrents of inquiries, from his family members, friends, colleagues and well-wishers, over his purported appointment.
His disavowal was contained in a press statement he released to the press in Benin City, the state capital.
“I am not a member of the said APC, neither of other political parties. Also, I had not subscribed to be a member of the said APC campaign committee nor was I contacted before the inclusion and widesprwlead publication of my name in it,” the statement read.
Erha, a frontline pro-democracy activist and one of the National Conveners of the Labour and Civil Society Coalition (LASCO), said that he had learnt to maintain his sanity and refrain from hobnobbing with some of the “so-called leaders, who are swindlers that couldn’t carry out very simple exercises, like party nomination, yet move to force or foist their persons on innocent voters of Edo State.”
“However, my rejection of the appointment is not a serious indictment on the person of Senator Monday Okpebholo (a.k.a. Akpakomiza), nor his governorship candidacy that informed the setting up of the campaign council.
“I had met Senator Okpebholo in person, and it is not in my character to doubt his professed commitment to be the governor of the state, as I hold him in high esteem,” Erha stated.
