Coco Gauff finally got her first win at the WTA Finals, as it came after she completely crushed Ons Jabeur in two sets.
The last time we saw them both play at an event was in China where Jabeur actually won a trophy at the Ningbo event. Gauff took part in the China Open and played well but got beaten by Iga Swiatek rather comfortably.
Neither ever played in Cancun, so both needed to adjust once they stepped on the court. As we predicted in our preview, Gauff adjusted better and completely crushed Jabeur, who has been quite erratic in the set. She didn’t serve well, and that created a lot of problems, but she couldn’t keep the ball in play either.
She totalled 12 unforced errors in those six games of play, which is a lot. Just do the match. It mostly came from Gauff being able to track down every ball, causing Jabeur to try and overhit in response to that. It’s a bad tactic and wasn’t going to work, as the score demonstrates well.
After one game in the second set, play was abandoned due to rain. It was the second time in the programme that the play was stopped due to rain, which isn’t a huge surprise. As sunny as Cancun is, it’s near the ocean, and quick showers are nothing strange.
The match continued after about an hour, with Gauff doing more of what she did before. It was the same for Jabeur, who kept struggling with her control slamming more balls wide. By the time the match was over Jabeur totalled 27 unforced errors which looked appaling next to only 5 winners.
The final score was 6-0 6-1 for Gauff, who won her first match at the WTA Finals. She went winless last year in both singles and doubles and lost the first doubles match with Pegula here as well. [tennisinfinity.com]
