The Katsina State office of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has successfully united a child who has suffered torture, inhuman and degrading treatment in the hands of his stepmother, with his biological mother in Natsinta village, an outskirt of the state.

The Katsina State Coordinator Barrister Adamu Kasimu Umaru stated this in the report of the activities of the State office to the Headquarters early in the week.

Barrister Umaru said the office received complaints from a good Samaritan alleging that the minor has been severely subjected to brutality by his stepmother who injured him with a hot spoon, and demanded that he placed his hands on a hot pot which he helplessly complied with, out of fear.
According to the state coordinator, he was also informed by the good Samaritan that the minor has sustained severe burns on his body as a result of the incessant torture he has suffered. He said the commission immediately intervened, involving the police to investigate and prosecute the perpetrator.

Barrister Umaru also stated that the office invited the biological mother of the child to request why the child was left in the custody of his stepmother. It was later gathered that the mother was divorced and had to leave him in the house with the woman who turned him into a victim of abuse.

The child was thereafter united with his mother and the office insisted that the father takes care of his upkeep even as he stays with his biological mother.

On his part, the father regretted the actions of his wife (the stepmother) and promised to take responsibility for the upkeep of the abused child and any other thing the commission deems fit in the best interest of the child.
