In a riposte to the claim by the Caretaker Committee of the Lagos Country Club that the club has been assailed by security issues and therefore shut down sine die, Secretary of the Caretaker Committee, Adetayo Adegboye has said that the club is fully opened for business.
His position is contrary to that of the Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Club, Chief Muniru Moradeyo and Sunny Ukhueleigbe respectively who, on Saturday, announced the indefinite closure of the Club purportedly for safety reasons.
Adegboye, in a statement dated October 12, 2024, said there was a letter purportedly written by Chief Muniru Moradeyo and Mr Sunny Ukhueleigbe claiming that the Club was “temporarily shut down for safety purposes.”
He stated: “I want to state categorically that at no time did the Caretaker Committee met (sic) to discuss the safety of the Club let alone decide that it is not safe for use.
“So, this is an illegal and unauthorized publication from the duo of Chief Muniru Moradeyo and Mr Sunny Ukhueleigbe and should be disregarded.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the two Halls of the Club are currently (sic) being used for booked events that have already commenced without any hinderances.
“Members are also in their various sections of the Club playing their games and socialising as usual.
“It is very obvious that this singular act of this duo is a last desperate attempt to stop the schedules inauguration of the new caretaker Committee planned for today (Saturday, October 12, 2024).
“Distinguished members, the Club is fully opened; members are in the Club going about their lawful business; events in the Halls are going on smoothly and the scheduled inauguration will go on as planned.
“Please, disregard any purported temporary shutdown of the Club”
Recall that Chief Moradeyo and Mr Ukhueleigbe, Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Caretaker Committee respectively, had in a public notice, dated October 12, 2024, a copy of which was made available to THE CONCLAVE, said that attention of the Caretaker Committee had been drawn to an illegal emergency general meeting (EGM) purportedly held by some disgruntled members of the Club on Thursday, the 10th of October, 2024.
They had stated that the October 10, 2024 meeting was held notwithstanding the directive of the Caretaker Committee against it and the fact that there were two pending cases before the Court seeking that the EGM should not hold pending the outcome of the cases.
“The EGM resolution attempts to overthrow the present Caretaker Committee and supplant this constituted authority with another committee contrary to the Consent Judgement under which the present Caretaker Committee was inaugurated without a Court Order and in contempt of the Consent Judgement and pending cases,
“This is an attempted coup d’e tat and extreme lawlessness which we, as law-abiding people, will not allow to happen.
“Due to the threats of violence being made by some elements of this group, and in order to avoid harm to Club members and their families and possible damage to property, we have come to the necessary though unpalatable decision to close the Club immediately with effect from Saturday, the 12th of October, 2024 until further notice and we urge everyone to stay away from the Club for now.
“We shall update you on developments and re-open the Club as soon as it is safe to do so,” the notice stated.
