A cancer survivor, Hajiah Meslimat Olamide-Adekoya, has said adoption of a recommended therapeutic life suitable to the disease and adherence to prescribed medication is important to survive.
Olamide-Adekoya said this during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the sideline of a cancer-awareness workshop in Lagos.
The workshop, organised by the Muslim Students Society Nigeria (MSSN), Lagos Unit, was designed to educate women on prevention and treatment of cancer.
NAN reports that prevalence of cancer, especially in Africa, has been worrisome that governments and organisations are working hard to curb its attendant human casualty.
Olumide-Adekoya said that her encounter with cancer began with feelings of pains in her armpit, chest and shoulder.
“I went to a hospital where l was tested and diagnosed with breast cancer. Mine is hereditary from my maternal side.
“On hearing the news, l was ‘devastated’, but resolved to put up a fighting spirit to be alive and trust God to persevere.
“It was a traumatic period of agony and misery but my inner conviction was that it cannot be the end of my life, love and care from family and friends which kept me on until it is over.
“Girls, ladies out there should go for a mammogram examination at least once a year to know their status. If it is positive, don’t run away, face it squarely, medically it will be healed,” she said.
Olamide-Adekoya, who decried the phobia of not going for the test for fear of being diagnosed with the disease, said that early confirmation is better and could be countered.
She said that having cancer is not a death sentence, adding that one could always overcome it following strictly the recommended medications and lifestyle. (NAN)
