It was supposed to be his service year. Instead, Abdulsamad Jamiu’s NYSC ended in a hail of gunfire.

The young corps member died before dawn on April 25, 2026, when a distress call turned Shagari Estate into a warzone.

Troops from the Guards Brigade’s Quick Response Group were on routine night patrol when the call came in: armed robbery in progress at Dei-Dei. They raced to the scene.

What they met was an ambush.

Fleeing suspects opened fire the moment soldiers arrived, Headquarters Guards Brigade said. The night exploded into a “fluid and highly volatile” gun battle.

Caught between soldiers and robbers, Jamiu fell. He never made it out of the crossfire. He died from his injuries — another casualty in Abuja’s long, bloody fight against urban crime.

The Brigade said troops were trying to repel attackers and shield residents when tragedy struck.

Commander of the Guards Brigade, with officers and men, sent condolences to Jamiu’s family, to the NYSC, and to a nation that has now lost one of the green-white-green vests it sent to serve.

His remains lie at Kubwa General Hospital.

Military authorities say a full investigation is underway to piece together how a rescue mission claimed the life it came to protect. Findings will be made public, the Brigade promised.

For now, the Guards Brigade insists it remains committed to protecting lives across the FCT. Residents have been urged to stay calm and keep working with security agencies.

But in Dei-Dei, the silence after gunfire is heavy. A corps member who answered Nigeria’s call is gone — killed not by bandits, but in the chaos of stopping them.

His NYSC year is over. Too soon. Too violently.
