The development of nations often comes at great cost. This reality is often overlooked in Nigeria, where there is a tendency to compare our nation to Western counterparts without considering the difficult journey those nations went through to reach their current status. The forefathers of those nations worked tirelessly and made sacrifices to lay the foundation for the countries that Nigerians frequently visit and admire. However, it seems that we are reluctant to endure similar hardships or make sacrifices for the benefit of future generations.

The truth is, many Western civilizations were built through hard work, resilience, and collective effort. Their progress was not handed to them; it was earned through perseverance and sacrifice.

If we want to build a prosperous and sustainable nation, we must be willing to face challenges and make sacrifices. We need to embrace the values of hard work, resilience, and sacrifice to move forward and achieve progress.

To propel Nigeria’s development journey, the current generation must acknowledge, honor, and follow the example of the sacrifices and struggles of our precolonial political leaders who fought for independence. These visionaries did not simply criticize from their comfort zones while preserving their personal interests. They dedicated their lives to the national cause, facing immense challenges and often paying the ultimate price in their quest for freedom.

Many of these courageous individuals spent years in prison, enduring harsh conditions and persecution for their unwavering commitment to our nation’s liberation. Some tragically lost their lives in the struggle, becoming martyrs to the cause of Nigerian independence.

Their sacrifices should remind us of the lengths people were willing to go for a better future for all Nigerians. Their resilience in the face of adversity and their unwavering belief in a free and prosperous nation should serve to inspire this present generation continue the struggle for a better Nigeria.

As we reflect on our nation’s journey and the challenges that lie ahead, let us acknowledge and adopted the examplary sacrifices of these brave men and women. Their legacy is a testament to the power of collective action and the enduring spirit of hope and resilience that defines the Nigerian people. By honoring their memory, we reaffirm our commitment to building a nation that is worthy of their sacrifice – a nation built on justice, equality, and opportunity for all.

Let’s draw inspiration from the resilience of our ancestors and commit ourselves to building our nation with the same passion and determination. By acknowledging the sacrifices of the past and embracing the challenges of the present, we can lay the foundation for a brighter future for generations to come.
