The British High Commissioner, Richard Montgomery, visited Enugu State between the 27th and 28th of June for high-level discussions with the state governor, Peter Mbah and key stakeholders in the state government, civil society, business and traditional leaders.
Throughout the two-day visit, the High Commissioner had the opportunity to meet with the Governor.
Their discussions revolved around the longstanding 20-year partnership between Enugu State and the former UK Department for International Development, now known as the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office.
They also explored avenues for enhanced collaboration in attracting investments, boosting trade, and creating more economic opportunities.
While in Enugu, the High Commissioner also had a meeting with HRH Igwe Lawrence Agubuzu, who serves as the Chairman of both the Enugu State Traditional Rulers Council and the Southeast Traditional Rulers Council.
During this encounter, Igwe Agubuzu provided the High Commissioner with insights into the efforts of traditional institutions in the South East region and their crucial role as promoters of peace, order, security, and the welfare of the people of Enugu State.
The High Commissioner Richard Montgomery engaged in discussions with Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, the President of Ohaneze Ndigbo.

Chief Iwuanyanwu and other members of Ohaneze Ndigbo shared their perspectives on investment opportunities and the business environment in the South East, as well as the potential of the agricultural sector to generate more opportunities for the region’s residents.
He also paid a courtesy visit to former Enugu State Governor, Sullivan Chime, during which they delved into current trends in Nigerian politics, geopolitics, and the potential within the South East region.
The High Commissioner met with representatives from civil society organizations in Enugu.
These individuals provided an overview of the opportunities and challenges present in the state.
The High Commissioner stressed the importance of robust and open dialogue between the state and civil society to effectively address these challenges.
As part of his efforts to support indigenous businesses, High Commissioner Richard Montgomery visited the Innoson Plant in Enugu.
He was taken on a tour of their premises by the management team, gaining firsthand insight into their operations.
Concluding the visit, the British High Commissioner, Richard Montgomery, expressed his impressions, stating, “Being here in Enugu has allowed me to witness the creative energy and entrepreneurial spirit of its people. The UK fully supports all endeavors aimed at fostering economic prosperity in Nigeria, including Enugu State. I am hopeful that we can embark on various initiatives to strengthen our partnership with the state.”
