President Muhammadu Buhari has disbanded the current Economic Management Team (EMT) headed by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and replaced it with Economic Advisory Council (EAC).
Other members of the Council are Dr Mohammed Sagagi who will sit as vice chairman, Prof. Ode Ojowu, Dr. Shehu Yahaya, Dr. Iyabo Masha, Professor Charles Soludo, Mr. Bismark Rewane while Dr Mohammed Adaya Salisu, senior special assistant to the president, development policy will serve as secretary
Femi Adesina, special adviser on media and publicity to the President, said the EAC, said in a statement that the team, which would be chaired by Professor Doyin Salami and report directly to President Buhari “will advise the President on economic matters, including fiscal analysis, economic growth and a range of internal and global economic issues working with the relevant cabinet members and heads of monetary and fiscal agencies”.
Adesina said the Council “will have monthly technical sessions as well as schedules quarterly meetings with the President,” adding that the chairman “may however, request for unscheduled meetings if the need arises.”
It was learnt that members of the disbanded EMT who sat on Monday were caught unawares by the decision of the president to disband the team.
“Whether we are told or not, we are thankful for the opportunity to serve in the disbanded team but people should know that it is the prerogative of the president to take whatever actions that concerns his government without consulting anybody,” a member of the team reportedly said Monday night.
