[Press Release] As part of moves to improve data management and protection protocols, the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) has formally signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the National Data Protection Commission.
The signing signalled the establishment of a strategic partnership between the two agencies.
Speaking on the occasion, the Director-General, BPP, Dr. Adebowale A. Adedokun, FCIPS, while welcoming the National Commissioner/CEO, National Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr. Vincent Olatunji, in his office in Abuja, called on all Nigerians to imbibe the culture of data protection for the purpose of private and national security.
The partnership with NDPC represents a significant step that focuses on strengthening security protocols, and ensuring regulatory compliance, which reinforces the commitment of both entities to high-level security standards, ensuring privacy and resilience in an increasingly digital landscape.
Dr. Adedokun reiterated that the MOU is a framework for cooperation, enabling the two agencies to share best practices, exchange insights into data governance, and address emerging cyber threats.
“BPP stands to release authentic information on procurement and procurement related data without bridging the ACT and Rules of data protection” he said.
He emphasised the proactive steps in addressing data privacy, challenges in the regulations, and restrictions on access to sensitive data by Nigerian citizens towards building a more trusted future.
He added that restricted access must be put in place to protect the Nigerian children and minors from sensitive data that they cannot make any meaning out of it.
The DG BPP stated that whoever violates the Data Protection Act will be held accountable. It is a criminal offence to divulge and release government classified data and information without authorisation. This should be translated into every sector to promote national development and safeguard the country’s national security.
The Commissioner of NDPC, Dr. Vincent Olatunji reaffirmed that the MOU is to deepen partnership in “Pen-on-paper, to work together to strengthen data privacy in Nigeria.”
He said that data protection has become a global concern and the President, His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR has deemed it fit to approve policies that will protect both private and national data, as protecting data extends to protecting the rights and freedom of all citizens, and ensures security and national development.
He clearly stated that the process in protecting data from underage citizens is in progress, and a national survey is being carried out for the purpose of managing and regulating the data of all Nigerians.
Both agencies agreed to establish a working committee for the training of officers and implementation guidelines.
This MOU brings mutual commitment to data integrity and protection, which helps in robustly for managing sensitive information for the protection of our collective national security and assets.
