Borno confirms escape of six repentant insurgents, denies arms theft

The Borno State Government has officially confirmed the. escape of six repentant insurgents recently processed through the Borno Model of Reconciliation, Peacebuilding, and Development.

Speaking on the matter, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Prof. Usman Tar, clarified that these individuals were part of a larger group of over 20,000 former militants who were documented, profiled, and categorized as “low risk” based on comprehensive assessments of their mental health, vulnerability to extremism, and likelihood of relapse.

The government assured the public that it is working closely with relevant security agencies to apprehend the escapees, who fled without weapons.

Dispelling circulating rumours, preliminary investigations confirm that the escapees did not abscond with government-owned arms. Prof. Tar emphasized that insurgents often obtain weapons from clandestine sources for use in propaganda, which does not imply that such arms originate from government stockpiles.

While the escape of these six individuals is concerning, the government highlighted that their number is insignificant in comparison to the over 20,000 former insurgents who have been successfully rehabilitated and integrated.

The Borno State Government also warned against the spread of misinformation, cautioning that it could harm the morale of both security forces and citizens, potentially playing into terrorist propaganda efforts.

Reaffirming its commitment to restoring peace and security, the government urged the public to continue supporting its ongoing efforts to achieve lasting stability across the state.
