The Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, NSCDC, Osun State Command, has appealed to residents of the state to see themselves as one irrespective of their tribe, religion and political affiliation.
Osun NSCDC made this appeal on Monday as it joined her counterparts around the world in celebrating 2021 World Civil Defence Day with the theme ; “Strong Civil Protection To Preserve The National Economy” held at its command, Osogbo.
The Osun NSCDC Commandant, Mr Abdulkadir Alao Sulu said development in any society could not thrive in the absence of peace, adding that even if there were misunderstanding and miscommunication, peace could be used to resolve it.
In their efforts to ensure that farmers and herders’ crisis including other social vices were averted in Osun, Commandant Sulu said his agency would be mobilizing stakeholders across the state to sensitize them on peaceful coexistence and peaceful resolution of conflicts.
He urged residents of the state not to take the law into their hands whenever they have issues among one another, saying security agencies were in the best position to assist them.
In preventing natural disasters, the Osun NSCDC boss explained that at this period in Nigeria there was always fire disaster which “occurs through man-made and natural disaster,” and warned citizens to be cautious of fire so that “when they are making use of it, it does not go beyond control.”
Commenting on the national insecurity ranging from banditry, kidnapping to killings bedeviling the nation, Commandant Sulu said improvement in funding, training of security personnel including NSCDC personnel by the federal government would enhance quick ending of insecurity confronting the nation.
Delivering his lecture, DCC Sanusi Hussaini noted that Nigeria Security and Civil Defence corps (NSCD) was a security outfit established by enacted act of parliament both upper and
lower chamber of the National Assembly as NSCDC ACT NO 2 OF 2003 as AMENDED IN 2007.
He added that the act empowered the corps to assist in the maintenance of peace and order and also in the protection and rescue of
the civil population during the period of emergency on saving of life, protection of property, environment , property and economy.
“In many countries, civil protection agencies
play a pivotal role when disasters strike. Dedicated men and women from these agencies lead effort to save lives, alleviates suffering and protect live hoods.
“A well functioning civil protection system is a diverse ecosystem of people and agencies each with a civil protection system grew into stronger entities that could rapidly respond to a disaster, significantly reducing the number of lives lost to disaster.
“In the last few decades rather than waiting for disaster to strike, Civil protection shifted toward a more proactive and integrated approach focusing on better preparedness and actionable early warning to minimise disaster risks and enhance the efficiency and speed of response.
“Civil protection is a multidimensional system based on broad range of cultural, geographical and economic enableler and barriers. Civil protection activities during the phase of emergency preparedness mainly consist of disaster risk forecasting, early warning system, emergency preparedness plan, collections and storage of emergency items, save evacuation mock drills.
“Civil protection agencies are typically involved in disaster emergency service and assistance during or immediately after the disaster. Saving
human life and preventing additional physical loss are the priority action at
this stage.
“Search, rescue relief, emergency health services, temporary shelter, safe drinking water, sanitation and arrangement of food are the other priority activities at this stage,” he said.
