Bayelsa: Traditional ruler’s son arrested for allegedly setting man ablaze over firewood theft

The Bayelsa State Police Command has arrested Mr. Ibobuminate Oweifa, son of the traditional ruler of Okodi community in Ogbia Local Government Area, for allegedly setting a man ablaze over accusations of firewood theft.

The suspect was taken into custody on Saturday, hours after the incident, which left the victim with severe burns.

–Victim in critical condition—

The victim, identified as Godgift Biko, is currently receiving treatment at the emergency ward of the Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Yenagoa. Hospital officials said he sustained extensive burns and remains under observation.

–Police confirm swift intervention—

Confirming the arrest in a telephone interview on Sunday, the Commissioner of Police, CP Iyamah Edebor, said officers responded promptly after the matter was reported.

“Upon receiving the report, the Divisional Police Officer moved swiftly to the scene, rescued the victim, and ensured he received first aid at a nearby clinic before he was transferred to FMC Yenagoa,” Edebor stated.

He added that the suspect was also apprehended at the scene and is currently in police custody.

CP Edebor said the command has launched a full investigation into the incident and assured that the suspect would be charged to court at the conclusion of investigations.
