Gov Douye Diri

Bayelsa State began commercial aviation operations on Monday with the inaugural flight of Pioneer Airlines, using an ATR 72-600 turboprop acquired by the state government.

Governor Douye Diri boarded the non-scheduled flight as its first passenger, “Passenger 1A.” The aircraft departed Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport at 11:10 a.m. and landed at Bayelsa International Airport at 12:15 p.m., after about one hour and five minutes.

The flight was piloted by Captain M. Ibrahim with First Officer Joyce. Other passengers included former House of Representatives member Hon. Gabriel Onyenwife and Special Adviser on Political Matters I, High Chief Collins Cocodia.

The launch marks Bayelsa’s entry into the aviation sector through a partnership with Pioneer Airlines. State officials said the initiative aims to improve connectivity, stimulate economic activity, and increase internally generated revenue.
