The Bayelsa State House of Assembly Committee on Education has commended the State Ministry of Education for effectively translating Governor Douye Diri’s vision into tangible achievements in the education sector.
Committee Chairman, Hon. Dr. Charles Daniel, gave the commendation during an oversight visit to the ministry’s headquarters in Yenagoa.
Dr. Daniel expressed satisfaction with the progress of both completed and ongoing projects, describing them as “enduring achievements that will stand the test of time.”
He praised the ministry’s leadership for demonstrating prudence, transparency, and accountability in the management of public funds.
The lawmaker also lauded Governor Diri for his administration’s sustained investment in education, which has led to significant improvements across primary, secondary, and tertiary levels.
He highlighted key accomplishments, including the accreditation of programmes in state-owned tertiary institutions, the successful implementation of the BayelsaPRIME initiative in primary schools, the establishment of technical colleges and new secondary schools, as well as the renovation and upgrading of existing facilities.
The committee members examined records of projects, programmes, and policies during the visit. Dr. Daniel urged the ministry to sustain the current momentum to further advance the Prosperity Agenda.
He assured the Commissioner for Education of the committee’s continued support and collaboration towards delivering quality education to the people of Bayelsa.
In his response, Commissioner for Education, Dr. Gentle Emelah, thanked the House Committee for its effective oversight.
He commended Governor Diri for prioritising education, noting that the state has moved from being educationally disadvantaged to an emerging leader in the sector.
Dr. Emelah reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to sustaining reforms and delivering quality education, describing it as the bedrock of societal development.
Other members of the committee on the visit were the Deputy Chief Whip, Hon. Chief Edward Irigha-Brigidi, Hon. Timi Agala-Omubo, and Hon. Wisdom Fafi.
The commissioner was joined by the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Simon Peter Okene, and directors of the ministry.
