Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State has shelved plans to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress after talks on a power-sharing arrangement broke down.

Sama’ila Burga, chairman of the Turaki-led PDP faction in the state, disclosed this to reporters in Bauja on Saturday.

Burga said consultations between the governor, his faction, and the APC leadership ended in deadlock after the ruling party rejected a 60-40 formula for control of the party structure in Bauchi.

Under the proposal, the governor’s camp would retain 60 per cent of the APC structure from ward to state level. Burga said the formula had been used in other states where governors defected to the APC.

“They rejected this formula and we have closed that discussion,” he said. “You cannot expect a government bringing its structure fr8om ward level to the state not to have control of the party.”

He added that the APC showed it was “not ready to accommodate the PDP structure and the state government.”

According to Burga, the APC initiated the talks through the governor. Its national leadership and Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf visited Bauchi to persuade Mohammed to join the party.

With the APC option off the table, Burga said the governor and his supporters remain open to other political parties.

“Plans are underway to consider fresh options for possible defection from the ward to the state Mike,” he said.

Burga noted that he called the press conference “at the instance of His Excellency, the Governor, who is leading the discussions.”
