The Nigerian Army has provided an update on the recent unprovoked attack on its personnel by unidentified hoodlums at Banex Plaza, Wuse, Abuja.
The incident occurred on Saturday, May 18, 2024, leading to the closure of the plaza the following day.
According to Director Army Public Relations, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, a high-level meeting was convened in response to the attack.
He said attendees included senior officials such as the Principal General Staff Officer to the National Security Adviser, the Commissioner of Police FCT, the FCT Director of the Department of State Services, leadership from Banex Plaza, a representative from the Directorate of Abuja Environmental Protection Board, and the National Chairman of the Mobile Phone Traders Association.
Nwachukwu said the primary objective was to identify and apprehend the attackers and ensure the security of the Federal Capital Territory.
The following resolutions were reached:
1. Immediate Reopening of Banex Plaza: The plaza will be reopened to the public without delay.
2. Closure of Shop C93: The leadership of Banex Plaza has been instructed to lock up Shop C93 immediately.
3. Arrest of Perpetrators: The shop owners responsible for the mob attack will be arrested and handed over to the Nigerian Police.
4. Vigilance by Market Leaders: Market leaders are to remain vigilant and report any remaining perpetrators to authorities.
Two individuals already arrested have been handed over to the headquarters of the Nigerian Army Corps of Military Police for further action.
Additionally, the Army will investigate the circumstances surrounding the presence of its personnel at the plaza and the subsequent attack.
Nwachukwu reiterated the Army’s condemnation of violence against military personnel, emphasizing that such acts posed significant threats to national security and public order.
“The public is urged to exercise caution and respect for military and security operatives, utilizing established channels for reporting grievances or misconduct.
“The Nigerian Army remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens and will continue working diligently to prevent future incidents,” he said.
