Atletico Madrid are through to the Champions League quarter-finals after edging Tottenham Hotspur 7‑5 on aggregate.

Even though Spurs won 3‑2 in London, it wasn’t enough to overturn the damage from the first leg.

The game had Spurs fans on their feet early when Randal Kolo Muani put them ahead.

The stadium erupted, and for a moment, it felt like the tie might swing their way.

But Atletico stayed calm. Julián Álvarez pulled one back soon after the break, and that goal seemed to suck the hope right out of Tottenham’s comeback.

Tottenham didn’t give up, though. Xavi Simons curled in a stunning shot to make it 2‑1 and keep their fight alive. Atletico, however, showed why they’re seasoned in Europe.

Dávid Hancko nodded in a late goal from a corner, and that was the game-changer. Spurs scored a stoppage-time penalty to make it 3‑2 on the night, but the aggregate told the real story.

Looking back at the first leg in Madrid, Atletico’s 5‑2 win had already put them in control.

Even with Spurs pushing hard in London, the Spanish side held on when it mattered most.

It’s a big night for Atletico, moving further in the Champions League.

For Tottenham, it’s a bitter exit and a reminder that Europe’s top competitions leave no room for error.
