In a heartfelt message, Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President of Nigeria and presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2023 election, has expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased and the government and citizens of Kwara State.
A statement said that Atiku was deeply saddened by the reports of the tragic boat mishap on the River Niger that resulted in the loss of numerous lives.
“The fact that the victims were wedding guests returning to Kwara State from neighboring Niger State, where they had attended a wedding ceremony over the weekend, made the situation even more devastating.”
Atiku emphasized the urgent need for introspection regarding the improvement of Nigeria’s infrastructure, particularly inland waterways and inter-state connections, to prevent such unfortunate incidents, which have unfortunately become more frequent in recent times.
He also highlighted the importance of providing life jackets that match the number of passengers on board the boats, as a crucial safety measure.
Atiku extended his heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved families, as well as the government and the people of Kwara State.
He prayed that Allah, the compassionate and merciful, would provide comfort to everyone affected by this tragedy.
