The embattled Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has formally announced his resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC) after days of speculations on the sensitive and intricate matter.
Governor Obaseki announced this on Tuesday morning in Abuja shortly after emerging from a private meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at Presidential Villa.
He disclosed that he would advance his second term bid on the platform of another political party.
Although he did not reveal his next destination, there are strong feelers he would move to the main opposition party in the state- Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
In the last few days, Obaseki has stepped up consultations with critical and influential stakeholders in the PDP.
The ConclaveNg can confirm authoritatively that a former president, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, is in the frontline of those asking Obaseki to port to their party.
The National Chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, is believed to be excited about the move and is said to be goading the party leadership on monetary implicarions of Obaseki’s move to contest the governorship on the party’s platform.
The embattled governor is carrying along his deputy, Philip Shaibu in the PDP deal, except that, according to reports, that would entail a far higher financial stake.
Governors of Rivers, Akwa Inom and Delta States, Nyesom Wike, Udom Emmanurl and Ifeanyi Okowa, had been consulted by Obaseki.
Obaseki is said to be consulting with top politicians in his home of Edo to get their consent and backing before announcing the party whose platform, he would use.
APC had, last week, disqualified Gov. Obaseki from participating in the state Governorship Primary Election billed for June 22, thus foreclosing his chances in the ruling party.
