Premier League: Arsenal beat Man United at Old Trafford, return to top

Arsenal defeated Manchester United 1-0 at Old Trafford to return to the top of the Premier League table on Sunday.

Leandro Trossard scored the only goal for Arsenal with an assist by Kai Havertz after Casemiro dallied.

Trossard’s early goal from Havertz’s right-wing cross put the Gunners ahead and though Erik ten Hag’s injury-hit United pushed hard for the equaliser, it would not come as Mikel Arteta’s team claimed their 18th clean sheet of this league season.

The three points move Arsenal back one point ahead of reigning champions Manchester City who have a game in hand – to be played at Tottenham on Tuesday night. Whatever happens in midweek, the Premier League title race will now go to the last day of the season.

On the day that Manchester United’s women’s team won the FA Cup at Wembley, the struggles of the men’s team continued. This defeat means that they remain three points behind Chelsea and West Ham in eighth, their hopes of Europe now slim.

The Premier League’s final day will take place on Sunday May 19. United head to Burnley, while Arsenal host Everton.

Before that, United face Newcastle at Old Trafford on Wednesday, May 15.

Arsenal have won three successive Premier League games against United for the first time since September 1998, while this season is just the fourth time they’ve done the double over them in the competition.

Arsenal’s win at Old Trafford was their 27th in the Premier League this season, only winning more league games in a campaign in the top-flight in 1970-71 (29) and 1930-31 (28).

United have lost 19 games in all competitions this season, their most since 1978-79 (also 19), while their nine defeats at Old Trafford this term is their joint-most at home in a season.
