The Nigerian Army has vehemently denied allegations of corruption and diversion of troops’ Ration Cash Allowance (RCA) by soldiers deployed to provide security for Chinese nationals atZungeru Hydro Electricity Dam Project in Niger state.
These claims, which were circulated by online media, purported that troops had not received their RCA payments for three months due to alleged misconduct by senior officers.
In a statement issued by the Director of Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, the Nigerian Army refuted these allegations, asserting its unwavering commitment to the welfare of its personnel. Under the leadership of Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, the welfare of troops is of paramount importance, forming a central pillar of his Command Philosophy, which aims to ensure “Sound Administration” for all personnel.
Nwachukwu said the Nigerian Army firmly stands against financial misappropriation and any actions detrimental to troop morale.
A preliminary investigation into the allegations has revealed that troops deployed at the Chinese Company in Niger state have consistently been paid their RCA payments in installments, as funds are received from the relevant institution.
He added that the most recent tranche payment of RCA for the affected troops was made up to February 28, 2023.
While the subsequent payment is being processed, Army Headquarters has taken steps to alleviate the troops’ conditions by covering the period from March 1 to June 30, 2023.
It is important to note that the RCA payments have not been diverted by any of the senior officers mentioned in the online report or anyone else, as incorrectly suggested.
Nwachukwu said that to mitigate the impact ofinstalmentt payments, provisions have been made to ensure that the troops are adequately fed on a daily basis.
:This has been a consistent practice aimed at safeguarding the well-being of the troops.”
He said the Nigerian Army was resolute in upholding principles of integrity, transparency, and accountability in the administration of the welfare of its personnel in all operational and organizational facets.
:These principles are in line with the Command Philosophy of the Chief of Army Staff, which seeks to transform the Nigerian Army into a highly trained, equipped, and motivated force capable of fulfilling its constitutional responsibilities within a joint environment.”
Nwachukwu said the Nigerian Army did not only recognize the importance of ensuring the welfare and well-being of its personnel but also acknowledge the positive impact this has on their overall morale. The Army remains dedicated to upholding these values and providing the necessary support to its troops, ensuring they can continue to serve their nation with excellence and dedication.
