The Nigerian Army has refuted reports describing Haruna Garba Gololo as a retired General, calling the claim false and misleading.
In a disclaimer issued Tuesday, the Army was responding to a Sahara Reporters publication headlined “Retired Nigerian Army General Arrested in Abuja After Criticising Senate President Akpabio Over 2027 Comments.”
“The Nigerian Army wishes to categorically state that Mr Haruna Garba Gololo is neither a retired officer nor a General in the Nigerian Army,” the statement read.
The Army said portraying Gololo as a retired senior officer was inaccurate and could mislead the public. It urged media organisations to verify information before publication, especially on matters involving the Armed Forces and national institutions.
“Consequently, it is imperative that media organisations exercise due diligence and uphold the principles of accuracy, fairness, and responsible journalism in matters relating to the Armed Forces of Nigeria and national institutions,” it added.
The Army called on platforms that published the report to correct the misrepresentation to prevent the spread of misinformation that could undermine public trust and institutional integrity.
It reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, transparency, and the defence of Nigeria’s territorial integrity in line with its constitutional mandate.
