Troops of the Nigerian Army have arrested a serving soldier for allegedly transporting illicit drugs in Delta State.

Security sources said the suspect, attached to the 14 Field Engineer Regiment, was apprehended about 5:30 p.m. on March 20 during an operation near Head Bridge in Asaba, Oshimili South Local Government Area.

The arrest was made by troops of the 63 Brigade Garrison while conducting routine “Operation Checkmate.”

The soldier was intercepted in a vehicle carrying a bag filled with assorted hard drugs.

Preliminary findings indicated that the suspect had abandoned his duty post at the arms store and was allegedly delivering the drugs to a suspected dealer within Asaba.

The suspect is in custody, while efforts are ongoing to track down other individuals linked to the illegal operation.

Military sources said the arrest underscored the Army’s zero tolerance for indiscipline and criminal conduct among its personnel, adding that appropriate disciplinary and legal action would follow the outcome of investigations.
