In a dramatic twist to the 2023 fast-paced politicking, Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State has reportedly buried his ambition to be president.
He has, according to a report first flagged by the People’s Gazette, declared his intention to contest the Ebonyi South senatorial seat in the 2023 general elections in the aftermath of a political anticlimax.
Umahi, whose eight-year tenure as governor ends in 2023, was initially nursing a presidential ambition and had vowed to continue the policies of President Muhammadu Buhari if elected.
It was unclear, as of press time, the factors that conspired to cause a change of direction in the governor’s original plan.
The race for APC’s presidential ticket is intense. The field is getting loaded. The move towards consensus is becoming a possibility. But the prospects of an Umahi consensus candidature are remote.
To dig in his feet in a political game that is not certain will tantamount to a sudden political failure in 2023.
Rather than embrace uncertainty, the Senate seat which is within his reach is certain and can keep him politically relevant in 2023 for another four years during which period he can align and realign his political plots and agenda.
The governor’s spokesperson, Francis Nwaeze, had yet to respond to the development.
