Amnesty International has called on the Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, to establish an independent judicial commission of inquiry to investigate the tragic deaths of at least 10 anti-hunger protesters at Kurna and Kofar Nasarawa, Kano.
The organization emphasized the need to scrutinize the actions of security agencies and the alleged involvement of hired thugs in the violent disruptions and destruction.
The commission should operate transparently and be adequately resourced, with provisions for financial support, expertise in criminal investigation, forensic analysis, legal analysis, witness protection, and data management.
Amnesty International stressed that failure to investigate these incidents, which occurred from August 1st to date, would represent a severe setback for the rule of law in Nigeria and contribute to the ongoing culture of impunity.
“To ensure a fair and effective investigation, it is crucial to protect victims, their families, and potential witnesses from any form of intimidation, harassment, or reprisals, allowing them to testify freely and without fear,” it said.
