Amnesty International has once again called for the immediate and unconditional release of Shafi’u Tureta, who was arrested and unlawfully detained on the orders of Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu.

Tureta was remanded in prison after sharing a widely circulated video of the governor’s wife’s lavish birthday party on social media.

On August 26, 2024, Tureta was swiftly arraigned before a Sokoto magistrate court, which ordered his detention.

Critics argue this is part of a broader plan to keep him incarcerated indefinitely as a form of punishment for exercising his right to free expression.

Amnesty International has condemned Governor Aliyu’s growing intolerance of dissent, calling his administration’s heavy-handed approach to critics unacceptable in a free society.

The human rights group insists that no one should be penalized simply for voicing opinions that challenge the government or its officials.

The organization also highlighted the Sokoto State government’s increasing efforts to target Tureta and other critics, viewing it as a clear attempt to silence dissent and stifle free speech in the state.
