Amnesty International Nigeria has described the death of human rights defender Ariyo Dare-Atoye as shocking and is a devastating loss for civil society in Nigeria.

Responding to the death of activist and human rights defender, Osai Ojigho, Director Amnesty International Nigeria said: “It is difficult to accept the passing of Ariyo Dare-Atoye. His death is shocking and is a devastating loss for civil society in Nigeria. He was a dedicated, committed, and courageous human rights defender whose contributions to protect human rights would leave a lasting legacy. In him, Nigeria had lost a champion of justice and freedom.

“Ariyo stood out for his role in the dogged efforts to educate the public, promote good governance, empower citizens to hold governments to account, in the face of overwhelming executive overreach. His role in championing the sanctity of the ballot through Electoral Act amendments will shine forever. Today we remember him for being there for Amnesty International Nigeria in 2017 when sponsored protesters invaded our office. Even during subsequent sponsored anti-human rights protests at our offices, he offered his fearless presence in support of our work. Infact, Ariyo was a notable face at all protests campaigning against injustice.

“While consoling his family, we will continue to remember him for his solidarity for victims of injustice and for going the extra mile to protect human rights. He remains an inspiration for all of us to do more for humanity by ensuring we speak up for justice and freedom.”
