Amnesty International, AI, has expressed concerns about the rejection of the bills on gender equality by the National Assembly.

According to the international human rights group, the bills set out positive measures to promote gender equality through its provision which included affirmative action in politics and leadership positions, and the right for women to confer citizenship on their foreign husbands.

Amnesty International further stated that through its ratification of CEDAW and Maputo Protocol, Nigeria had obligations to condemn discrimination against women in all its forms, refrain from engaging in any act or practice of discrimination against women and ensure that public authorities and institutions act in conformity with this obligation.

Amnesty International therefore called on the National Assembly to reconsider these bills and ensure their speedy passage.
