Amnesty International has strongly condemned the threats and intimidation directed at a young woman who posted a TikTok video expressing frustration over Nigeria’s worsening economic situation.
The woman, currently enrolled in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme, alleged that NYSC officials threatened her for refusing to delete the video.
In an official statement, Amnesty International affirmed that the woman was well within her rights to express her views peacefully.
The organisation criticized the authorities’ response, urging them to focus on addressing the country’s economic challenges rather than targeting individuals for voicing legitimate concerns.
“Instead of threatening individuals for expressing their views on rampant inflation, the authorities should be prioritizing effective measures to address the economic crisis,” the statement read.
Amnesty International further highlighted that millions of Nigerians are facing extreme poverty due to the government’s failure to implement adequate mitigation strategies.
The organisation stressed that responding to dissent with threats and intimidation violates both the Nigerian constitution and international law.
“Holding and voicing dissenting views is not a crime,” Amnesty International stated, calling on Nigerian authorities to uphold the right to freedom of expression and peaceful protest.
