• Calls for end to clampdown on dissent
Amnesty International has issued a strong condemnation of the arbitrary detention of Nigerian activist and journalist Omoyele Sowore, who is reportedly being targeted by the police for exercising his right to freedom of expression.
The organization expressed concerns over the unconstitutional bail conditions imposed on Sowore, describing them as a clear violation of his fundamental right to liberty.
“Omoyele Sowore’s detention and the unlawful restrictions placed on him highlight the growing dangers faced by individuals who speak out for human rights and expose the truth in Nigeria,” Amnesty International stated.
The group urged the Nigeria Police Force to immediately withdraw the bail conditions and release Sowore unconditionally.
Amnesty International further criticized President Bola Tinubu’s government for what it described as an escalating clampdown on dissenting voices and a blatant disregard for constitutional and international legal standards.
“The actions against Sowore are part of a disturbing pattern that threatens the ability of Nigerians to freely express themselves without fear of persecution,” the organization said.
The global rights group called on the government to respect its obligations under Nigeria’s constitution and international human rights treaties, emphasizing that freedom of expression is a cornerstone of any democratic society.
It urged authorities to create an environment where citizens can openly advocate for human rights and hold the government accountable without intimidation or reprisal.
Amnesty International’s statement comes amid growing criticism of the Tinubu administration over its handling of dissent and human rights issues. Sowore, a vocal critic of government policies and advocate for social justice, has faced repeated arrests and harassment in recent years, drawing widespread condemnation from human rights organizations and the international community.
As calls for Sowore’s release intensify, Amnesty International reiterated its demand for an immediate halt to actions that stifle dissent and urged the Nigerian government to reaffirm its commitment to upholding democratic principles and protecting the rights of all citizens.
