• Review panel recommends officers’ prosecution for conspiracy, theft, false and malicious publications against NPF
The Nigeria Police Force has upheld its earlier decision regarding the alleged wrongful dismissal case involving Sergeant Shola Akano and Corporal Babatunde Glorious from the Kwara State Police Command.
The officers, who were previously dismissed from their positions, had contested their termination, claiming it was unjust.
In order to address the trending allegations and clarify the circumstances surrounding their dismissal, the Nigeria Police Force reviewed their case and reaffirmed the integrity of the disciplinary process.
According to CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, a thorough investigation was conducted by the Special Investigation Unit of the Force Criminal Investigations Department.
It was disclosed that Sergeant Shola Akano and Corporal Babatunde Glorious were assigned to the Public Complaint Bureau, Office of the Public Relations Officer, Kwara State Police Command.
Their primary responsibility was to handle complaints related to police unprofessionalism and misconduct.
He said during the investigation of a conspiracy and advance fee fraud case in February 2020, the officers engaged in misconduct that warranted their dismissal from the Nigeria Police Force.
While dealing with the case, they arrested two suspects, Fatai Ridwan Olarewaju and Awogbemi Samuel Olayinka.
On February 7, 2020, they took one of the suspects, Fatai Ridwan Olarewaju, from the police cell to a Zenith Bank branch where they coerced him into withdrawing the sum of N1,190,000.00 (One Million, One Hundred and Ninety Thousand Naira) from his account.
The money was collected by Corporal Glorious.
Despite their duty being to uphold the law, the officers continued to demand more money from the suspect to close the case, engaging in acts of extortion.
Adejobi said these actions were in direct violation of their duties and the code of conduct for police officers, leading Mr. Fatai to report the matter to the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the IGP X-Squad for investigation.
During their trial, verifiable evidence, including the conversion of one of the suspect’s mobile phones, an iPhone 11 Pro, for personal use by Corporal Glorious, was presented.
Based on a thorough examination of the evidence and testimonies from all parties involved, the officers were found guilty and subsequently dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force.
He said the officers had previously made a complaint of wrongful dismissal before the #EndSARS panel in Ilorin, but their dismissal was upheld after careful review of the evidence and testimonies.
Several panels conducted subsequent reviews and recommended the dismissal and prosecution of the officers, which will be carried out accordingly.
Adejobi emphasized the Nigeria police commitment to ensuring discipline, accountability, and professionalism within its ranks.
It condemned any form of misconduct and assures the public that necessary actions will always be taken to maintain the trust reposed in the Police.
He said the dismissal of Sergeant Shola Akano and Corporal Babatunde Glorious underscored the Force’s dedication to eradicating bad elements and upholding the values of justice and fairness.
