The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has officially requested the presence of all 18 Local Government Chairmen of Edo State for an investigation into financial matters.
This request, detailed in a letter (CR:3000/EFCC/HQ/EGS 1/T.F/OBA/VOL.4/670), was addressed to the Secretary to the State Government through the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.
The EFCC’s Director of Investigation, Abdulkarim Chukkol, outlined the need for clarifications on specific financial practices within the local governments. Chairmen from Akoko-Edo, Egor, Esan Central, Esan North East, Esan South East, Esan West, Etsako Central, Etsako East, and Etsako West are scheduled to appear at the Commission’s Benin Zonal Directorate on Thursday, December 19, 2024, at 10:00 am.
Chairmen from Igueben, Ikpoba Okha, Orhionmwon, Ovia North East, Ovia South West, Owan East, Owan West, and Uhunmwode are to follow on Friday, December 20, 2024, at the same time.
The summoned officials are required to bring Certified True Copies of documents related to staff strength, payroll, and financial accounts, including, details of accounts used for receiving and reserving funds for staff salaries.
Account statements covering the period from January 1, 2024, to date and any other information relevant to the investigation.
This request is made under the EFCC Establishment Act, 2004, Sections 38(1) and (2). The EFCC emphasized its expectation of full cooperation from the chairmen to aid in the investigation process.
