The Akwa Ibom State Government has inaugurated a Task Force on Human Trafficking.
Speaking at the inauguration in the Government House, Uyo, on Wednesday, Governor Udom Emmanuel who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government Dr Emmanuel Ekuwem thanked the Director General National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons(NAPTIP), Dame Julie Okah-Donli for showing so much zeal in ensuring that Human Trafficking was stamped out of the State and Nigeria.
He promised the full support of the Governor in this fight and assured the DG that all would be done to ensure that NAPTIP goy all necessary assistance to make its operations easy in the state.
The Director General of NAPTIP said the inauguration of the Task Force was a strategic initiative aimed at enhancing synergy among partners in the fight against Human Trafficking in Nigeria.
She gave him an overview of NAPTIP, the Agency’s mode of operation as regards Human Trafficking, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence.
Okah-Donli further explained how NAPTIP was working assiduously to “ensure that Akwa Ibom and Nigeria as a whole becomes free of this deadly disease.”
She said 66 victims of trafficking (52 females and 14 males) from the state had been rescued in 2020, adding that Oron Local Government being the most endemic with over 40% of victims hailing from the LGA.
