Akpabio orders probe of DStv billing system, questions disparity with South Africa
Godswill Akpabio

President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has directed the Senate Committee on Telecommunications to investigate the billing structure of DStv, raising concerns over what he described as a potentially unfair system affecting millions of Nigerian subscribers.

The directive was issued during plenary, where the Senate President expressed strong reservations about the current subscription model operated by the pay-TV provider in Nigeria. Akpabio pointedly questioned why a company that runs a “pay-as-you-go” model in South Africa would maintain a rigid, fixed subscription system in Nigeria, regardless of usage or service interruptions.

He noted that such disparity raises critical concerns about consumer protection, equity, and regulatory oversight within Nigeria’s telecommunications and digital services space. According to him, Nigerians should not be subjected to a system that appears less flexible and potentially exploitative when compared to what is obtainable in other jurisdictions where the same company operates.

The Senate President therefore mandated the Committee on Telecommunications to carry out a comprehensive probe into DStv’s billing framework, including its pricing model, service delivery patterns, and compliance with consumer rights standards. The committee is expected to report back with recommendations that could lead to reforms aimed at protecting Nigerian consumers from arbitrary or excessive billing.

Akpabio’s intervention has already sparked conversations among subscribers and industry observers, many of whom have long advocated for a more flexible billing approach, particularly in a country where economic pressures continue to weigh heavily on households.

The outcome of the Senate’s investigation could mark a turning point in how pay-TV services are structured in Nigeria, potentially compelling operators to adopt more consumer-friendly models or face regulatory consequences.
