President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Friday, inaugurated the All Progressives Congress (APC) Convention Subcommittee on Programmes and Events, urging members to work diligently to ensure a successful national convention.

Speaking during the committee’s inaugural meeting in Abuja, Akpabio described the appointment as a privilege and commended the party leadership for assembling experienced members for the task.

He noted that the leadership of the All Progressives Congress under Professor Yelwata Natawe carefully selected competent individuals for the subcommittee, expressing confidence that the team would deliver effectively.

A statement issued by Jackson Udom, Special Assistant to the President of the Senate on Media, quoted him to have said the committee must ensure proper organisation of the event, including maintaining order at the venue and avoiding unnecessary repetition of speeches.

“We must remember the reason we are here. Our responsibility is to ensure the convention is well coordinated, that the venue remains orderly, and that speeches are not unnecessarily repeated,” he said.

Akpabio added that the committee would also take into consideration Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones to give states the opportunity to highlight their achievements, particularly the performance of their governors.

The Senate President also used the occasion to reaffirm the commitment of the National Assembly to support national development by backing the policies and programmes of the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

He said the legislature would continue to support the President’s economic reforms aimed at stabilising the country’s economy, including the unification of the exchange rate and the removal of fuel subsidy.

Akpabio also noted that ongoing tax reforms had boosted government revenue from the non-oil sector through the National Revenue Service (NRS), resulting in increased allocations to subnational governments.

Commenting on the recent wave of defections to the ruling party, he said the development reflected public appreciation for the achievements of the Tinubu administration since 2023.

According to him, the committee is expected to organise a convention that will usher in new national officers of the party and position the APC for another electoral victory in 2027.

In his remarks, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, supported Akpabio’s views on the administration’s economic policies. He congratulated members of the committee and urged them to work hard to ensure a successful convention.
