Aisha Yesufu dumps ADC for NDC, declares run for FCT Senate seat

Activist and #BringBackOurGirls co-convener Aisha Yesufu has left the African Democratic Congress for the Nigeria Democratic Congress and announced her bid for the Federal Capital Territory senatorial seat.

Yesufu disclosed her defection Wednesday on her verified X account, saying the move aligns with her continued support for former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, whom she described as “the embodiment of hope and aspiration of a Nigeria that works.”

“The next couple of days will define the future of this nation,” she wrote. “This deeper understanding is why I resigned from the ADC to join the NDC as I follow the leadership of HE Peter Obi.”

Yesufu said her switch reflects a promise she made when she first aligned with Obi’s political movement in 2023.

“When I give my word, I keep it. My decision to support HE Peter Obi first led me to the ADC. To continue to honour the promise I am joining the NDC,” she stated.

This marks Yesufu’s first run for elective office. She stressed that her transition from the ADC was orderly and that she had concluded all outstanding obligations before exiting.

“I have tidied up all my obligations to the ADC, ensuring a clean transition. I was fortunate to work with great and amazing people whose goal was a better country,” she said.

During her time in the ADC, Yesufu served in several strategic roles, including sub-committee chair, deputy committee chair and secretary.

She rose to national prominence through the #BringBackOurGirls campaign and later became one of Obi’s most visible supporters during the 2023 presidential election. She played a key role in mobilizing young voters under the “Obidient” movement, which reshaped Nigeria’s political landscape.

Political analysts say her entry into the FCT Senate race could further shift opposition dynamics in Abuja as realignments continue ahead of the next electoral cycle.
