Airline says safety checks underway as bird strike incidents rise at Nigerian airports

An Air Peace aircraft operating an Abuja-Kano flight was grounded Wednesday after a bird strike shortly after landing at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, the airline confirmed.

Air Peace said the aircraft was immediately withdrawn from service in line with aviation safety regulations pending technical assessment.

“In strict compliance with aviation safety protocols, the affected aircraft has been grounded for comprehensive technical assessments,” the airline stated.

Maintenance engineers are evaluating the extent of damage to determine when the aircraft can return to service. Bird strikes often require detailed inspections of engines, wings and fuselage even when visible damage appears minor.

–Alternative aircraft deployed–

To limit disruption, Air Peace deployed a replacement aircraft on the route. The airline said the move was to ensure passengers reached their destinations safely and with minimal delay.

“We deeply empathise with our esteemed passengers affected by this unforeseen operational disruption,” Air Peace said, appealing for understanding while reiterating that safety remains its top priority.

The incident adds to a growing number of bird strike cases affecting airlines across Nigeria in recent months.

Aviation experts link the trend to environmental factors around airport corridors: open refuse dumps, waste disposal sites, water bodies and rapid urban development that attract birds. Though airport authorities deploy wildlife patrol teams and bird-control measures, incidents persist at airports nationwide.
