The newly appointed leader of the Pan- Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, said he was not party to the secessionist agenda of some sections of the country.
Pa Adebanjo also said Yoruba leaders and Yoruba nation were in support of restructuring of Nigeria rather than separating from the union.
He spoke on Wednesday on African Independent Television (AIT) breakfast programme “Kakaaki”.
He said that other nationalists and he were not interested in the disintegration of Nigeria.
Read him: “I don’t support separatist agenda. I say no to it and I oppose it. I am for the unity of Nigeria so I don’t want the disintegration of the country.”
Adebanjo insisted on restructuring Nigeria so that the federating units could control their own affairs.
He stated that the current structure of Nigeria was not working and coul not work.
Adebanjo said that Yoruba leaders were not against the restructuring of Nigeria.
He cited, for instance, the Governor of Ondo state, Arakunri Oluwarotimi Akeredolu whom.he said was in support of restructuring of Nigeria.
According to him: “I publicly challenge Yoruba leaders who dare to oppose restructuring. I can
confidently say that Yoruba leaders including Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinunbu and the Obas support restructuring. Nobody is against it.”
He, however, admitted that some Yoruba leaders who previously supported restructuring had sold out immediately they achieved their selfish ambitions.
He insisted that the best way to move Nigeria forward was through restructuring.
