Lawyers, who are involved in Alternative Dispute Resolution [ADR] need to come up with new and better strategies that will help in mediation, especially after court referrals.
This was the submission of discussants at a workshop organized by the ADR Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association Section onLegal Practice (NBA SLP).
The workshop which was held at the Justice Umezulike Auditorium on the premises of Enugu State High Court was attended by lawyers nationwide.
The meeting was both physical and virtual.
Chairman of NBA/SLP Chief Mrs. Boma Alabi, SAN, said that theworkshop with the topic “Actionable Strategies For Mediation After CourtReferrals,” was important given the growing importance of Alternative Dispute Resolution ((ADR).
She maintained that lawyers needed to know where to start especially when the matter had been referred to the ADR for settlement.
Speakers at the workshop, Mrs Caroline Etuk, director of Enugu State Multidoor Courthouse, and Achere Cole, director of Lagos State Multidoor court house stressed the need for lawyers to be “well prepared for the mediation process just like they do before going to court.”
They also urged lawyers to be innovative and come up with ideas that would be of benefit to all the parties in the matter and not just their client alone.
They also urged lawyers to “always inform their clients on what to expect when they come to ADR,” adding that “the ADR is indeed faster in dispute resolution when all parties are well informed and prepared.”
