Chukwuka Monye, innovation strategist and former presidential aspirant under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has come under scrutiny after allegedly failing to refund $58,500 mistakenly sent to him by a Nigerian cryptocurrency trader.

The trader, Jola Omotoso, told FIJ on Thursday that he mistakenly transferred the funds to a wallet provided by Monye’s team during what was supposed to be a test transaction on July 11.

“A former client of mine suggested a cryptocurrency deal with Dr Monye. We began negotiations and, while testing with a $1 transfer, my team mistakenly sent $58,500 to the wallet,” Omotoso explained.

According to him, Monye acknowledged the error but has since failed to return the funds despite repeated appeals. “Since July 11, Dr Monye has been giving countless excuses and has refused to return the $58,500,” he said.

Omotoso added that the incident has put his company, CryptoJumbo, at risk of reputational damage. “I admit a mistake was made by my team, but Dr Monye had acknowledged the receipt. He should have made a refund,” he stated.

Efforts to reach Monye for comments were unsuccessful as he neither answered phone calls nor responded to WhatsApp messages from FIJ.

Monye, who contested in the ADC presidential primaries in 2023, is yet to issue any public statement regarding the allegations.
