Abuja Catholic Archdiocese mourns stampede victims at food distribution event

The Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja has expressed profound sorrow over the tragic stampede that occurred during a food-sharing event organized by the St. Vincent de Paul Society at Holy Trinity Parish, Maitama, Abuja.

In a statement released on December 21, 2024, Archbishop Ignatius A. Kaigama conveyed condolences to the families of the deceased and prayers for the recovery of those injured in the incident, which claimed over ten lives.

“This great tragedy is a devastating blow to our community,” the Archbishop said, noting that the St. Vincent de Paul Society’s charitable work reflects the Church’s commitment to supporting the poor and vulnerable.

Archbishop Kaigama urged the Archdiocesan family and the public to join in prayers for the eternal repose of the departed souls and the healing of the injured.

Quoting Matthew 5:4, he reminded all: “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.”
