A community is demanding justice after a nine-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a married father of children.

The Abia State Police Command on Friday confirmed the suspect, Njoku Stephen of Ebem Ohafia, is in custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department.

–How the incident unfolded–

According to community sources, the alleged assault happened last Friday. The girl reportedly went to the suspect’s kitchen to drink water.

Stephen, who lives in Ebem Ohafia with his wife and children, allegedly threatened her not to speak up. She later told her parents.

Sources said some residents had previously suspected Stephen of inappropriate conduct involving minors.

Police PPRO, DSP Maureen Chinaka, confirmed: “The command is aware. The incident scene was visited, and the suspect apprehended. Investigation is ongoing at the SCID and will be charged to court at the conclusion of the investigation.”

The child was medically examined at Ohafia General Hospital and findings documented. The case has also been reported to the Office of the Wife of the Governor of Abia State.

–Community outrage–

Women of Ebem Ohafia staged a protest 3 days ago, using the traditional “Ikpa Mbogo” — dumping refuse at the suspect’s residence to express outrage.

The Ebem Ohafia Development Union condemned the act as “disturbing, unacceptable, and contrary to the values, traditions, and moral standards of the Ebem Ohafia people.”

Publicity Secretary Chief Ifeanyi Okali said EODU has “zero tolerance” for abuse of children and vulnerable persons.

He confirmed the International Federation of Women Lawyers, FIDA, is now involved.

While praising women’s determination to protect children, the union appealed for calm: “Residents to remain peaceful, law-abiding, and committed to due process.”

It urged people to avoid unverified information that could prejudice investigation.

–“Safety of children is collective responsibility”–

EODU stressed: “The safety, welfare, and protection of children remain a collective responsibility that the community takes seriously. Anyone found guilty of acts that threaten the safety and welfare of children must be held accountable in accordance with the law.”

Police say charges will follow once investigations conclude.
