The leadership and members of the different unions at Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State have commended the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Chief Dan Orbih, and other council members for approving the payment of the N70,000 minimum wage to the workers.

A statement by the Principal Assistant Registrar and Head of Information and Public Relations, Otunba Mike Aladenika, said that the union leaders expressed deep appreciation for the council’s approval of the long overdue minimum wage.

According to Aladenika, the unionists recalled that under the previous administration, their efforts to implement the minimum wage were unsuccessful.

They reportedly lamented that they faced victimisation for advocating better worker welfare.

The institution’s spokesperson pointed out that the unions did not pressure the Governing Council before the approval.

He said this move highlighted the council’s proactive approach to addressing staff members’ concerns.

Meanwhile, Chief Orbih has assured staff members and students of the state-owned tertiary institution of “well-thought-out policies” to reshape the institution’s fortune for the better.

The pro-chancellor, who spoke recently with journalists shortly after the council’s 235th regular meeting, said the council approved the N70,000 new minimum wage, as recommended by the National Universities Commission (NUC), effective immediately.

He urged staff members to rededicate themselves to their duties, promising further benefits for dedicated employees.
