Nigerian music star 9ice, born Abolore Akande, has revealed that he has practised as a traditional priest, popularly known as a babalawo, for more than 18 years.

The singer made the disclosure during the listening party for his new album, Beginning of Wisdom, where he spoke about keeping his spiritual identity away from the public for years out of fear of being misunderstood.

According to the Gongo Aso crooner, he deliberately concealed this part of his life because he believed many people would distance themselves from him if they discovered the truth.

“I have been a babalawo for more than 18 years, but I hid it because if people knew, they would run away from me,” he said.

9ice explained that his latest creative direction is inspired by a desire to merge the deeply traditional elements of his faith with a modern sound that resonates with younger listeners.

He said he wants to present the spiritual and ritual-rich essence of his beliefs in a fresh, contemporary way that appeals to today’s generation while preserving its authenticity.

The singer also reflected on his spiritual evolution, noting that he has always been open and intentional about every phase of his faith journey.

He added that while he had previously been known as a devoted Muslim and later a committed Christian, he now believes he has discovered his true calling in traditional spirituality.
