Federal University Birnin Kebbi, FUBK, has confirmed the killing of Zaharadeen Nuhu, a 300-level Biochemistry student, after suspected thieves attacked him with machetes at his off-campus hostel in Kalgo Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
The university’s Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Ibrahim Magawata, disclosed the death in a circular issued Thursday and made available to journalists in Birnin Kebbi.

According to Magawata, the deceased, who hailed from Niger State, was attacked by a group of suspected hoodlums at his private hostel residence in Kalgo.
He sustained severe machete injuries during the attack.
“He was taken to hospital but sadly passed away early this morning,” the dean said. “It is with a heavy heart and total submission to the will of Allah that the university management announces the death of our dear student, Zaharadeen Nuhu, a 300-level student of the Department of Biochemistry.”
The student was buried Thursday after funeral prayers at the Mosque of the Federal Teaching Hospital, Birnin Kebbi.

Magawata said FUBK management had reported the incident to the Nigeria Police Force, Kalgo Division, and investigations had commenced. He added that security patrols had been intensified in Kalgo and other off-campus areas where students reside.
The university has also scheduled a meeting with private hostel owners in Kalgo to enforce stricter security measures, including improved lighting and the engagement of night guards.
The dean urged students to remain calm, vigilant and law-abiding, and to avoid spreading unverified information that could cause panic.
He advised against late-night movements, recommended moving in groups where necessary, and urged prompt reporting of suspicious persons or activities to security agencies.
“The university management communicates with the family, friends, coursemates, and the entire student community over the loss, and prays for the repose of the deceased’s soul,” Magawata said.
FUBK said it remains committed to ensuring the safety and welfare of its students as police continue investigations into the killing.
