In the realm of leadership theories, one stands apart as the oldest and most revered: The Great Man theory. Dating back to the 19th century, it holds the belief that leaders are not made, but born. According to this theory, certain individuals possess inherent qualities that destined them for positions of leadership. These qualities include charisma, intelligence, and a natural ability to listen, act, and lead.
However, there is a deeper layer beyond these traits – virtues that go beyond the surface. Compassion, empathy, and a heart that beats in harmony with the people. It is these virtues that set apart a true leader. And one such leader emerged fifteen years ago as Governor of Akwa Ibom – a man by the name of Akpabio.
Akpabio won the hearts of his people through his uncommon bias towards youth development, support for women, elders, and every element of human progression. He, like Tinubu, believed in uplifting others without looking back. And he did so with such fervor that it became a trend. He raised men and women like it was going out of fashion.
Sometimes, his efforts were rewarded, while other times, he felt the sting of ingratitude. Yet, this gentleman never wavered in upholding the spirit of humanity and transformational leadership.
He dared where angels feared to tread. If you were to closely examine ten successful individuals or businesses from that region, you would find that Akpabio’s hand of goodwill has touched seven of them. The state commands respect largely due to his giant strides in infrastructure, empowerment, and a unique political sagacity that is peculiar only to him.
During the process of succession planning, I observed with admiration how he engaged with the people through town hall meetings to sell his carefully nurtured successor and zoning consideration, even when he could have simply exerted his power or force the people into submission.
Fast forward to his courageous stint at the Niger Delta Ministry, right after a bold outing as a strong voice of opposition in the Minority Leader position. One cannot help but admire the oil and grace he carries!
Today, I watched him apologize and stride with disarming charisma as Chairman of the National Assembly, I am filled with pride and humbled by the lessons in humility that this detribalized Nigerian exudes. He not only has unwavering respect for family, but also embodies the traits of a leader who loves and continuously yearns to be in the hearts of his constituents, citizens, and admirers.
In Akpabio, we find a leader who is not bound by the constraints of tribe or political affiliation, but rather a leader who transcends these boundaries to serve the greater good. His charm, his unwavering dedication, and his ability to connect with the people inspire us all to strive for greatness and make a positive impact in the lives of those around us.
