Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu threw his weight behind Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat to succeed him in 2027, calling him “fit, ready and well-prepared” after Hamzat formally declared his ambition Monday at the State House.
Hamzat showed up with a heavyweight delegation — party leaders, cabinet members, ex-senators, former ministers, and diplomats — to notify the governor of his intention to run.
Sanwo-Olu called it a “warm family meeting” that ended with unanimous backing for the deputy governor.
“We just concluded a visit where the deputy governor came with a strong delegation to formally inform me of his intention,” Sanwo-Olu said.
“At the end of consultations, it was unanimous that the deputy governor is fit, ready and well-prepared.”
The governor leaned hard on Hamzat’s credentials, saying he’s been in the engine room of the administration from day one.
“He is a man who understands governance deeply and has been part of the system, knowing how every aspect functions,” Sanwo-Olu said.
“He has worked with me with humility and at the highest level of integrity, loyalty, commitment and support.”
Sanwo-Olu framed the formal notification as a mark of respect and pointed to President Bola Tinubu’s long hand in their political rise.
“I thank our father and leader, the president, who saw the vision years ago and believed in both of us,” he said.
With Tinubu’s blessing and a unified delegation behind him, Sanwo-Olu expressed confidence in Hamzat’s chances and urged Lagosians to back his deputy for continuity in 2027.
