Political parties and their presidential and National Assembly flagbearers on Tuesday committed to peaceful and issue-focused campaigns by signing the First National Peace Accord ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The ceremony, organised by the National Peace Committee in collaboration with The Kukah Centre, was held in Abuja a day before campaigns officially begin.
Signatories pledged to reject violence, hate speech, personal attacks, misinformation and any actions that could undermine the credibility of the electoral process.
The event however recorded notable absences. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde were not present. Both men are running for president on the platforms of the African Democratic Congress and the Nigeria Democratic Congress respectively.

President Bola Tinubu, who is seeking a second term under the All Progressives Congress, was represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume.
Also in attendance were the INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, leaders of political parties and several presidential hopefuls.
